Why Your Body Remembers What You Try to Forget.

Understanding Trauma Beyond Memory

We often think of memory as a mental filing cabinet—a collection of stories, dates, and events we can choose to open or ignore. But trauma doesn’t work that way.
For many survivors, memory doesn’t only live in the mind. It lives in the muscles, the breath, the gut, and the heartbeat.
At Tikvah Counseling Services, we believe that understanding how trauma works—especially in the body—is one of the first and most powerful steps toward reclaiming your life.
What Is Trauma, Really?
Trauma isn’t just a bad event.
It is the emotional and physiological response to an experience that was too much, too fast, or too soon for your nervous system to handle.
When the brain senses danger, its internal alarm system—the amygdala—takes control. This activates survival responses we often hear about:
Fight – preparing to defend or resist
Flight – preparing to escape
Freeze – shutting down when escape feels impossible
In that moment, survival becomes the priority—not reflection, logic, or long-term memory storage.
The “Body Memory” Connection
Have you ever:
Felt your heart race “for no reason”?
Suddenly gone numb or exhausted in certain places?
Reacted strongly to a tone of voice, smell, or sound without understanding why.
This isn’t a weakness.
It’s your nervous system trying to protect you.
When a traumatic experience isn’t fully processed, the brain stores it as a current threat, not a past one. As a result, the body stays on alert long after the danger has passed.
This can show up as:
Hyperarousal – anxiety, panic, anger, restlessness
Hypoarousal – numbness, depression, shutdown, dissociation
Your body isn’t broken. It’s doing exactly what it learned to do to keep you alive.
Three Signs Your Body May Be Holding Onto Trauma
1. Exaggerated Startle Response
Being unusually jumpy or highly sensitive to loud noises or sudden movements.
2. Unexplained Physical Pain
Chronic tension in the jaw, neck, shoulders, or back that doesn’t fully ease with rest or medication.
3. Emotional Flashbacks
Sudden waves of fear, shame, helplessness, or sadness—without consciously remembering the original event.
These reactions are not “overreactions.” They are unresolved survival responses.
How Healing Happens
Healing is not about “getting over it” or forcing yourself to forget.
It’s about teaching your nervous system that the danger is over and that you are safe now.
At Tikvah Counseling Services, we integrate:
Talk therapy for meaning making and understanding
Grounding and regulation techniques to calm the body
Trauma-informed approaches that respect your pace and boundaries
The goal is not to erase the past, but to help your body update its understanding of the present.
A Note of Hope
The brain is neuroplastic—it can reorganize, adapt, and heal.
With the right support, what once felt overwhelming can become manageable.
The weight your body has been carrying does not have to be permanent.
Healing is possible.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
If this resonates with you, Tikvah Counseling Services is here to walk alongside you—gently, safely, and at your pace. You don’t have to carry the weight of the past alone. >
If you recognized yourself in these descriptions, please know that your body is simply trying to keep you safe—and it is possible to find peace again. At Tikvah Counseling Services, we offer a safe space to help you understand your nervous system and begin the journey toward wholeness.
